Westside Laser Dermatology is awaiting delivery of the MiraDry machine- a permanent solution to sweaty armpits. Miradry should be in Australia in 2014 depending on Government red tape.
miraDry is a completely new type of treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating) that was cleared by the US FDA in January 2011. We expected the machine to be here in 2013, but looks like 2014 ATM.
miraDry uses a non-invasive handheld device to deliver precisely controlled electromagnetic energy beneath the underarm skin to the specific location of sweat glands, resulting in controlled elimination of the sweat glands in the armpit. While the sweat glands are being eliminated through electromagnetic technology, the upper skin layers are simultaneously cooled and protected. Sweat glands do not grow back after treatment so the effect can be seen almost immediately and results are lasting. miraDry recommends 2 procedures 3-4 months apart.
To date, three clinical studies of miraDry have been reported and the results are excellent, with a very low complication rate. This treatment can only be used on the armpits, and not for palmar –plantar hyperhidrosis (sweaty hands and feet).
Unfortunately Australia’s health care lags behind the United States and the UK by 3-8 years. A classic example is the approved used of Botox for underarm sweating. The United States approved this treatment by Dermatologists for underarm sweating in 2004, TGA, Australia’s governing body approved its use in 2012. That's 8 years after the US!
